What is the Summer Institute?

The Teaching and Learning with Technology Summer Institute is a way for faculty to learn about instructional technology tools and techniques that can be used to support teaching and learning at NC State. Faculty members will learn about supported technologies and resources available to them on campus as well as specific technical skills that will facilitate the creation and publication of web-enhanced materials. Faculty members will have the opportunity to discern what tools and techniques work best in their own contexts.

By the completion of the Summer Institute, participants will have the knowledge and skills needed to begin creating a web-enhanced or online course. In addition, participants will be aware of other emerging instructional technologies used to support instruction, and will better understand the issues involved in utilizing technology to support teaching and learning.

What does the Institute Offer?

  • A collegial environment for exploring online teaching and learning
  • Workshops and opportunities for personalized consultations in instructional design, HTML and graphics editors, video/audio digitizing and streaming, and learning management systems
  • Free web development software (Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Lunchtime speakers and panels
  • Lunch and breaktime snacks each day
  • Choice of morning or afternoon training sessions

When and Where?

The 10th Annual Summer Institute will be held May 12-16, 2008 in the DH Hill Library. The morning cohort will run from 8:45am - 1:30pm, and the afternoon cohort will run from 12noon until 5pm (Lunch for both cohorts is from 12 - 1:30pm).

Who is invited?

We are looking for faculty who are new to the area of online or web-supplemented instruction and are interested in knowing how to get started enhancing a course with technology. All teaching faculty who have not attended a previous Institute and who meet the prerequisites are eligible to apply.

NOTE: If you have a tech support person that can join you during the Summer Institute, please let us know by submitting his/her name on the registration form.. On a case-by-case basis, we will make every effort to accommodate support staff during the institute if we have room.

Prerequisites

To be eligible, applicants should have content resources available (e.g., document files of introductory texts, syllabi, instructional texts, etc.) for a specific course.

In addition, before arriving, applicants should be able to name, find, add and delete files, and navigate file directories in a Windows environment.
